BlogsNewsDr Azzam with his team after completing the cataract and retinal detachment surgery

EyeCare Hospital has achieved a remarkable milestone in ocular surgery with the successful completion of Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery combined with Retinal Detachment (RD) Surgery. Under the leadership of Dr. Mohamed Azzam, Vitreo Retinal and Phaco Surgeon at EyeCare Hospital, this groundbreaking procedure took place on Monday, February 19th, 2024.

Retinal Detachment surgery involves the meticulous removal of pathological vitreous humor, a gel-like substance deep within the eye. This is followed by the delicate reattachment of the retina to its normal position, facilitated by silicon oil and cutting-edge endo-laser technology. Post-surgery, the retina was securely reattached with the assistance of silicon oil.

The patient, a 75-year-old female, presented with sudden unilateral vision loss and was initially assessed elsewhere before being urgently referred to EyeCare Hospital for vitreo-retinal consultation. Upon examination, she exhibited Hand Movement vision with cataract and Sub Total Rhegmatogenous Retinal detachment, characterized by retinal breaks.

Under Dr. Azzam’s expertise, the team performed combined phacoemulsification & foldable lens implantation alongside trans-pars plana vitrectomy, fluid air exchange, endo-laser treatment, and silicon oil injection. Post-surgery, the patient experienced significant visual improvement, with complete reattachment of the retina achieved. The scheduled removal of the silicon oil is planned after three months.

Notably, this surgery marks a significant milestone as the first of its kind performed in the Maldives. Utilizing state-of-the-art Phaco & Vitrectomy systems recently introduced at EyeCare Hospital, this achievement signifies a leap forward in offering advanced Vitreo-retinal and complex ocular surgeries locally in the Maldives.

The conditions necessitating such surgeries often arise from age-related changes within the eye, leading to the development of small retinal breaks. Left untreated, these conditions can progress to retinal detachment, resulting in sudden vision loss.

The ability of EyeCare Hospital to provide this cutting-edge surgery locally holds immense significance. With this advancement, individuals facing similar conditions can now access prompt and safe treatment within the Maldives.

EyeCare Hospital encourages individuals experiencing similar conditions to undergo regular eye health examinations and risk assessments with an ophthalmologist. Those at high risk are advised to schedule routine visits with a retina specialist to monitor their eye health and prevent potential complications.

EyeCare Hospital remains dedicated to delivering high-quality, accessible healthcare services to its patients. Through the utilization of advanced surgical techniques and expert medical care, EyeCare Hospital strives to achieve the best possible outcomes for ocular health conditions.
